Modes of Administration
For cannabinoids to have their effect, they must find their way into the bloodstream. This can happen in many ways, each method with its own set of benefits and drawbacks. To ensure your pup gets the most benefit from cannabinoid supplementation, be sure to choose the right mode of ingestion.
Inhalation
The best known way to get cannabinoids into the bloodstream is via inhalation. When cannabinoids enter into the lungs by way of smoke or vaporization, they are absorbed into alveoli—tiny air sacks lining the lungs—in a matter of seconds. Due to rapid absorption that the large surface area the alveoli provide, cannabinoids take a few seconds to a few minutes to take effect when inhaled. Because dogs have greater sensitivity than do humans to cannabinoids—especially the psychoactive cannabinoid, THC—inhalation is not recommended for standard cannabinoid administration. Also, it’s not practical since dogs don’t smoke.

Typically, dog owners inhale the cannabis themselves then blow it directly into the dog’s snout or ear for absorption. Though some dogs don’t seem to mind, forcibly restricting a dog to blow an abrasive substance into its lungs could exacerbate anxiety, especially if the smoke or vapor contains high doses of THC.
Experts generally recommend avoiding inhaled cannabis with dogs except under extreme circumstances and only for hemp products that contain little to no THC.
Oral Ingestion
Cannabis’s therapeutic properties are effective when consumed orally, albeit to a different extent. Cannabis that is eaten must be metabolized in the digestive systems before it can be absorbed into the bloodstream, which can take as long as 1 to 2 hours depending on many factors—body weight, metabolic speed, coinciding meals, and lasts for many hours after effects come one. Though this may be ideal for continuous relief, a miscalculated dose or an uncomfortable level of THC could upset little Fido for an extended period of time.
